What to Expect

The Tarawera Ultra is part of the Ultra Trail World Tour, but unlike other races in the series, it seems much more beginner friendly, or at least it’s pitched that way. There’s 18,000 feet of climbing to tackle, but the organizers say its moderately hilly and mostly runnable.

"We don’t rise to the level of our expectations, we fall to the level of our training."

-David Goggins

With the course being a mix of single-track trails, forest roads, farmland, and public roads, there will be plenty of diversity in scenery to keep you entertained. Rotorua, where the race is based, is known for its geothermal activity. So if you’re sore after finishing, you can head to a natural hot spring to recover before heading to Mount Tarawera or Waimangu Volcanic Valley for a stunningly beautiful recovery hike.
